Our History
Meet Michelle Gbelama-Okore
Michelle is a Youth Development Specialist and Professional Tennis Coach with 17+ years of experience, working with over 5,000 young people in the NJ/NY area.
Michelle graduated from Drew University with a BA in Economics and a master's in Creative Writing.
At Drew, she played number one singles and doubles tennis, was two times MVP recipient, captain of her team and the first woman in Drew's history to win the NJAIAW tournament.
In 2019 Michelle founder the sister company She Leads Sports, an organization that empowers girls to become productive women through sport-based activities.
Michelle decision to establish organizations centered around serving young people is based on her believes that young people deserve every opportunity to be successful. She understands that sports are a unique vehicle for developing skills that are applicable for young people to succeed in school, the community, and in living a productive life; Therefore, she has dedicated her life to create paths for young people to discover their purpose and fulfill their assignment on earth.
In addition to her involvement with both organizations (WE Lead Sports Inc & She Lead Sports LLC), Michelle serve on many boards including the United states Tennis Association New Jersey District & Middle State Boards, Capital Harmony Board. She also serves as a leader at Transformation Church in Trenton NJ.
Mission
WE Lead Sports uses sports and leadership to build characters and empower youth to rise above adversity and soar high in all areas of their lives.
The organization provides its programs to youth ages 4 to 15 residing in Mercer county. We dedicated a strong focus on under resourced communities within Mercer County.
Vision
To develop youth in under-resourced communities and provide opportunities to support their academic, athletic and personal growth.
To ensure that every child is given an opportunity to receive free or low-cost programs within their communities.
Curriculum
Our lessons are intentionally designed to reach specific program outcomes such as :
· Positive Social Emotional Learning (SEL) gains
· Increased physical activity
· Improve positive behavior and develop culture changes
Our curriculum focuses on providing hands-on instructions to help students effectively understand the fundamentals, become more comfortable on the tennis court and or soccer field, learn positive values, work on techniques, tactics and improve their mental and physical health.
Who We Serve
We serve youth ages 4-15 living in the Mercer area, specifically Trenton, Ewing and Lawrence.
We are dedicated to providing essential tools adapted to the needs of young people living in the Mercer County communities, where average household income is low, college enrollments are low and the ratio of students to mentors is extremely low.
These factors affect academic engagement , as students do not receive the support, they need to successfully navigate the necessary steps to obtain life after high school.
Through partnerships with schools and community organizations, we ensure that students have access to the necessary programs that are age-appropriate and structured to give them the best results.
